Web-based mapping tool focused on vacant land in Oakland
The Oakland Community Land Trust (OakCLT) is partnering with a group of volunteers on an initiative called CityFarmShare. In brief, the overarching goal of CityFarmShare is to make more land available for community gardening and urban agriculture in Oakland.
A group out of NYC (596acres.org) has developed a property viewer specifically suited to this kind of work. The code is on GitHub, and has recently been adapted for use in New Orleans and Philadelphia. We’d love to stand up a version of this platform for CityFarmShare and OakCLT to help push our work forward in Oakland.

GIS Maps that show air quality, air pollution, and community demographics.
I work for a non-profit that is trying to secure funding for school programs centered around air quality and climate change. One of the things we need to convince potential funders of is that the areas with the worst air are also the areas where communities of color are centered.

Violence prevention, violence interruption programs
Oakland has over 30 civilian programs related to violence and crime prevention. Many are funded through measure Y. Most have other, usually greater, funding from other sources. A GIS component could relate where these programs operate to crime levels in those areas

Oakland Unified Staff Data
Oakland Unified's HR department strives to find, keep and grow extraordinary adults who are committed to providing incomparable instruction, services and schools for Oakland’s children. However; without data to tell us who our successful employees are and where they are coming from, it is difficult to ensure we are providing our students with the most effective adults we can.
OUSD is building systems and processes around data to help us to better answer strategic questions about our staff, but even before our larger data clean-up efforts are finished, there is data that we can use to learn more about our…

Hyperlocal job listings
We're lucky if job listings are tied to a city or zip code. Better to see job listings by block or sub-neighborhood. We can use this to fill local jobs faster, to minimize commutes, and improve the local economy.

Crime report data mapped to show common criminal routes and overall vectors
Most criminals behave in habitual ways... commit the same categories of crime... the same way... often in the same areas, too. I propose mapping crimes (that can be linked to the same perpetrator) by date and time to show a probable route of travel and then an overall vector. Map enough of these routes and OPD could target these hot routes for increased patrols and more diligent enforcement of jaywalking, vandalism, noise and moving violations, etc. Using the vectors OPD could pinpoint areas where criminal organizations are basing their operations.. or where multiple perpetrators are living.
